Cassian Andor Prequel Spin-off Series Set to Begin Filming in the Fall

When it comes to being a Star Wars Fan, this year has a lot to offer. Not just in film with Star Wars Episode IX that will be hitting theatres in December but also:

  • Star Wars: Resistance Season 2
  • Star Wars: The Mandalorian
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars
  • Star Wars Galaxies Edge (That’s two Parks in California and Florida)
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  • Along with many Books & Comics (Including Thrawn: Treason, Queen’s Shadow, Age of and more)

Not bad, it’s a lot more content than last year. Over Christmas, it felt odd not having a Star Wars film being out (or a Doctor Who Episode either) with some Fans saying they would have liked one. Looking back, maybe Solo: A Star Wars Story could have fared better at the Box Office with a Winter release. Who knows. It was Bob Iger’s decision for a May release for the Anthology Film.

But enough doom and gloom. Because later this year the Cassian Andor Prequel Series will be going into production in October of this year, according to Production Weekly. There’s a lot happening during this final third of 2019 involving Star Wars isn’t there? This October production date will most likely give the pre-Rogue One series a 2020 debut over on Disney+. At this time it’s the only thing (apart from another Movie, possibly) that we know of coming out from LucasFilm in 2020. Of course as the year goes on, we’ll find out more about what’s coming in 2020.

The so far untitled series will follow the adventures of the Rebel Spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One. The series has been described as a “spy thriller” set within the Star Wars universe that will explore tales of espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Galactic Empire. (Ohh yeah 2020’s is the 40th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back)

“Some of us – well, most of us – we’ve all done terrible things on behalf of the Rebellion. Spies, saboteurs, assassins. Everything I did, I did for the Rebellion. And every time I walked away from something I wanted to forget, I told myself it was for a cause that I believed in. A cause that was worth it. Without that, we’re lost. Everything we’ve done would have been for nothing. I couldn’t face myself if I gave up now. None of us could.”

– Cassian Andor

I want to see this, these terrible things Andor and others had to do in the name of the Rebellion. Rogue One gave us a taste of that. That the Rebels weren’t all squeaky clean. During Cassian Andor’s introduction in the film we see him kill Tivik, a Rebel informant. So not only can he escape but so that the Empire can’t interrogate Tivik. It was an act of murder, but it was done for the survival of the Rebellion.

Like The Mandalorian, this Cassian Andor Prequel Series could show us a more “mature” side of Star Wars. A darker and grittier side. Push the envelop on what we’ve seen so far in Star Wars. I’m not suggesting a 18 or R rating, but a very strong PG-13 or 12, possibly a 15 in the UK. I was quite surprised to hear the word “Bastard” being said by Finn in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, you also had Lando nearly dropping a “Ohh Shit” in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Apart from Diego Luna, LucasFilm has not announced any other cast members, though it is early days after all. Though it is highly possible we’ll be seeing some familiar faces appear in the Prequel Series.

Question is, are you looking forward to this series? I myself am intrigued.
