Yesterday Lucasfilm and Del Rey announced the next instalment in Timothy Zahn’s new Thrawn series, titled Star Wars: Thrawn: Treason.
This latest novel will be thirteenth story that Timothy Zahn has written for Star Wars. Ten for Legends three for the new Canon. The character of Grand Admiral Thrawn was first introduced back in 1991 in Timothy Zahn’s first Star Wars novel, Heir to the Empire. and later its sequels Dark Force Rising and The Last Command. Author Timothy Zahn has stated that Thrawn’s character is a composite of various historical and fictional personalities, including Erwin Rommel, Robert E. Lee, Hannibal Barca, Alexander the Great, and Sherlock Holmes.
After LucasFilm on April 25, 2014, Lucasfilm announced that the Expanded Universe was being reorganized under the new non-canon “Star Wars Legends” banner to make way for a new line of continuity, led by principal projects Star Wars: Rebels and the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, to take shape. All previously published Expanded Universe material remained in print as Legends stories.
A couple years later Zahn returned to help bring the iconic character of Thrawn back, with a new Novel (Thrawn) and working alongside Dave Filoni as an adviser for the Character for both Season 3 & 4 of Star Wars: Rebels, where he became the primary antagonist to the Ghost Crew following Vader (Season 2) and The Grand Inquisitor (Season 1). Thrawn’s reintroduction was met positively by most fans. During the 2016 Star Wars Celebration fans went wild when he was revealed to be made Canon in the Trailer for Season 3. Fans reactions at 1:45.
Not much about Thrawn: Treason has been revealed apart from a release date for summer next year and a small preview synopsis. But from what the synopsis alludes too it will be set just before Season 4 of Star Wars: Rebels.
Grand Admiral Thrawn faces the ultimate test of his loyalty to the Empire in this epic Star Wars novel from bestselling author Timothy Zahn.
“If I were to serve the Empire, you would command my allegiance.”
Such was the promise Grand Admiral Thrawn made to Emperor Palpatine at their first meeting. Since then, Thrawn has been one of the Empire’s most effective instruments, pursuing its enemies to the very edges of the known galaxy. But as keen a weapon as Thrawn has become, the Emperor dreams of something far more destructive.
Now, as Thrawn’s TIE defender program is halted in favor of Director Krennic’s secret Death Star project, he realizes that the balance of power in the Empire is measured by more than just military acumen or tactical efficiency. Even the greatest intellect can hardly compete with the power to annihilate entire planets.
As Thrawn works to secure his place in the Imperial hierarchy, his former protégé Eli Vanto returns with a dire warning about Thrawn’s homeworld. Thrawn’s mastery of strategy must guide him through an impossible choice: duty to the Chiss Ascendancy, or fealty to the Empire he has sworn to serve. Even if the right choice means committing treason.
Once again there are hints to a threat from the Unknown Region. Something that has been cropping up in the new Canon books. Something hiding out beyond the outskirts of the known Galaxy. (No, I’m not going to theorise about it) Maybe we’ll get some sort of idea what that is in Thrawn: Treason.
Since the announcement, fans have now coined the latest Thrawn novels as the “New” Thrawn Trilogy, which is a fitting name. You have The Thrawn Trilogy with: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command and now the “New Thrawn Trilogy with: Thrawn, Thrawn: Alliances and Thrawn: Treason.
Timothy Zahn has always been a favourite to Star Wars fans. And this announcement of a new novel was a complete surprise, but a welcome one. More Thrawn the better. Even more stuff to look forward too for next year before Star Wars: Episode IX.
Star Wars Thrawn: Treason will be out on shelves Summer 2019.
