Lost In Translation: The “Lando” Standalone IS NOT Confirmed

So articles left, right and centre have been appearing all day saying something along the lines of “LucasFilm says Lando will be the Next Standalone Film”. Well this isn’t the case. (Why does something like this happen every week?)

A quote Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy apparently gave to Premiere France during the Cannes film festival sparked the breathless speculation that swept across the internet like wildfire:

“We think that the next spinoff will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next.”

Now given that Premiere France is funnily enough a French Magazine the quote’s context was lost in translation. Though Premiere France did update they’re article of the interview, it was too late as dozens upon dozens of other sites had already ran the story of a upcoming Lando movie. So now there’s some folks out there thinking that in 2020 we’ll be seeing Lando: A Star Wars Story.

Given Donald Glover’s incredible and growing popularity and that his performance in Solo: A Star Wars Story indicating that he steals very scene he’s in, the idea of his own Standalone film wouldn’t be a surprise. That aside though, when reached for comment, a LucasFilm representative said that the quote wasn’t translated correctly and that “[Kennedy] said it’s something she’d like to do one day in the future.”

So the idea is there, LucasFilm according to Kathleen Kennedy are open to a Lando film as there is potential, given both Lando’s and Glover’s popularity, it’s just not happening right now, it’s not official. If it was official it would have been confirmed over on the official Star Wars.com website.

Nothing more than an a honest mistake over translation. Nothing more.
